Overview

The Husband Stitch is a hand-bound, coptic-stitched expression of Carmen Maria Machado's short story of the same name, translating its themes of the body, consent, and inherited violence into a tangible object bound in skin-tone leather and embroidered thread. Constructed entirely by hand, every aspect of the book's physicality is filled with intention, reflecting the story through materiality.
Challenge

To build a typographic and material system flexible enough to read as tender at first glance while revealing a darker architecture upon further inspection.

Narrative       

Following a warped interpretation of the children's story of the Girl with the Green Ribbon, this artist book expresses physicality through materials and typography. The physical book mirrors the narrator's slow loss of autonomy: pages become more loosely bound, text rotates on the page, and typefaces shift letter by letter. Typographic experimentation was the heart of the project — I ran the story's most subtly loaded line, "Tell me about your ribbon," through dozens of treatments to see how repetition could shift from intimate to menacing. The final object, hand-bound in skin-tone leather with a single embossed, stitched form on its cover, keeps that tension in the reader's hands, not just on the page.
