Overview

This project investigates how a single instance captured in a photo can have multiple emotional interpretations and differing memories associated with it. Emotional Distance explores memory of a wonderful trip and subsequent emotional distress ulters perception over time through an information design. This project aims at decoding conflicting emotions while parsing out specific moments in time; differentiating between the feeling then versus perception now. Using personal archives collected during a trip to South Korea to visit my now ex boyfriend, the project visualizes the relationship between emotional experiences recorded in the moment and later reflections after those memories had been fundamentally changed.
Challenge

How can deeply subjective emotional experiences be translated into a rigorous visual language without reducing their complexity? The project sought to transform memory into measurable relationships through data collection, categorization, and visual mapping.

Emotional Distance :
Analysis of Emotions Photos Taken Days before a Breakup Evoke Over Time

Narrative

Emotional Distance traces the gap between an emotional experience and the memory of it, using a personal photo archive collected in South Korea in the days surrounding the cause of a breakup. Each image was tagged across variables like location, sensory details, and emotional tone. Each image and instance was then plotted against time to reveal how feeling actually decays — unevenly, in spikes and lingering clusters. The resulting system treats memory as data: countable, comparable, and mapped without losing its complexity. The project argues that even the most subjective experience can hold up to analytical rigor without being reduced by it.
